Frank W. Thompson Lodge, A.F. & A.M.

A Discussion with the Master

What prompted you to join Frank W. Thompson Lodge?
I joined the Masons as a sincere effort to connect with my community. I work in Boston and found that my connection with Bedford was limited. After joining the Lodge I gained more than a few new friends, I also found the history and ritual of Masonry to be so enlightening and intellectually stimulating that I engaged in the Lodge activities, one thing led to the next and now I am Master.

What do you think every prospective member should know about Masonry?
Without a doubt that you get out of it what you put into it. This is an all volunteer organization and everyone shows up because they are inspired to be a part of this great organization and to enjoy the fellowship of the Lodge. I tell all prospective members that work and family come before Freemasonry and they should never feel badly about missing a meeting or a special event. Some members choose to take in the rich offering of Freemasonry and as a result are busy several nights each month; others can attend just a few times each year. Everyone's contribution is valued equally.

Is there anything off limits in Lodge?
We strive for harmony at all times. Two discussion topics expressly forbidden in Lodge meetings are politics and religion. The central goal of the Lodge is to bring together men in a harmonious setting where they can support each other and celebrate each other's success. We all have our own personal feelings about the world's goings on but one of the unique aspects of the Lodge is that everyone sets aside the contentious parts of their life entering the Lodge. Consider this for a moment: since 1717 Freemasonry has accepted all men who believe in a Supreme Being who are willing to work together. Over the past 300 years there have been many conflicts between religious and societal groups, yet Freemasonry still survives largely based upon the radical idea that tolerance and equality should always rule the day.

Is Freemasonry fun?
Yes, there are many enjoyable aspects of being a Mason. Personally, I enjoy discussing the symbols selected by the Craft to embody Masonic principles. Community service and the opportunity to be a part of a great effort that serves our fellow Freemasons and their families as well as the broader community is also a big draw. Finally, I enjoy being a part of the rich fabric of Freemasonry that has extended throughout the world for nearly 300 years. Massachusetts Freemasons can be particularly proud of their past, present and future contributions to the Craft.

Are there any special perks to being the "Worshipful Master"
Ha! That term is a bit out of place in today's society and is a respectful term derived from an ancient English usage meaning the guy in charge. For me the special perk of my office is being able to have a direct impact on the lives of fellow Masons and my community.
